Assam CM pays tribute to late Army Jawan Mitu Kalita who lost his life in Sikkim floods

Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, today visited the residence of late Army Jawan Mitu Kalita in Baksa district and paid tribute to the young jawan who lost his life in the devastating flash floods in Sikkim.

Chief Minister Sarma also handed over a cheque of Rs. 5 lakh to the kin of the dead jawan.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma further instructed local MLA Phani Talukdar to take necessary steps to renovate the road between Saudarvitha Govardhana connecting Sankar Mandir and Ananda Bazar near the house of late Kalita.

Mitu Kalita went missing in the devastating flash floods in Sikkim caused by the glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) at the Lhonak Lake in the Chungthang area of North Sikkim on October 3. His body was found on October 5 buried under the debris.

Mitu was posted in Alipurduar. He went to Sikkim on departmental orders.

The death toll in Sikkim has increased to around 55, while over 150 people, including army personnel, are still missing.

According to the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), the flash flood has affected around 25,000 people.

Evacuation and rescue operation is underway in the flood ravaged state. Indian Army is also providing relief and shelter to the people stuck there due to flash flood.
