The lengthy meeting was attended by four SoO group leaders representing KNO and UPF
Assam chief minister and NEDA Convenor Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma last night met leaders of Kuki rebel groups who are under the suspension of operations agreement and discussed means to bring back peace in Manipur. Four SoO group leaders representing the Kuki National Organization and the United People’s Front met Dr Sarma in Guwahati.
Well informed sources told Northeast Live that the meeting was positive. SoO group leaders when contacted said the meeting was on desired positive lines but refused to make a formal statement immediately. The lengthy meeting was attended by four SoO group leaders, two each from the KNO and UPF.
The meeting comes close on the heels of the NEDA Convenor’s visit to Imphal where he had met the state CM biren Singh, MLAs and civil society leaders from the Valley.
Dr himanta Biswa Sarma will be visiting Churachandpur and Kangpokpi in the next few days where he would be meeting Kuki civil society groups and kuki political leaders besides others.
Dr Sarma has been working relentlessly behind the scenes for the past five weeks of violence in Manipur that has taken more than a hundred lives, uprooted
40, 000 or more people from their homes and widened the divide between the Kukis and the majority Meiteis.
It is now clear that Dr Sarma is working on a peace plan initiated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah who paid a four day visit to the state recently.
