The students have vowed to continue their protests until their demands are addressed by the concerned authorities.
Tension erupted at Dhanamanjuri University in Imphal, Manipur today as students suspended classes and set fire to university property in protest against the delay in holding the long-overdue Student Union elections.
Classes have been shut down until the government conduct the Student Body Polls.
The closure comes after students at the university intensified their demand for the long-overdue elections, which have been pending since 2023.
The protests intensified after students, who have been demanding the elections since 2023, raised their voices for immediate action.
They had submitted multiple memorandums to relevant authorities, including Chief Minister N Biren Singh urging that the elections be held as soon as possible.
Initially, students had requested a notification for the elections by December 10, 2024, but with no response, frustration mounted and led to violent protests today.
The students have vowed to continue their protests until their demands are addressed by the concerned authorities.
With the closure of the university, the situation remains tense as both the administration and students await a resolution to the ongoing dispute.
