Assam CM flags off 200 electric buses in Guwahati

As a gift to the people of Guwahati on the first day of the New Year, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today flagged off 200 Air Conditioned (AC) electric buses in the city with an aim to combat air pollution in the city.

The buses will ply along 13 routes across Guwahati under the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC).

These buses are fitted with CCTV as well as GPS tracking. These buses have been purchased under the Guwahati Smart City Limited.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma said, ” The state government is aiming to operate pollution-free public transport in Guwahati by 2025. Soon we will launch 200 more electric buses in the city. In the next two years, 500 electric buses will be plying in Guwahati and buses running on diesel will be phased out.”

The Chief Minister said that aditionally, subsidy will be provided to individual vehicle owners under the state government Electrict Vehicle (EV) policy, so that they can convert their diesel vehicles into electric vehicles.

It may be mentioned here that 15 EV buses are already plying on the streets of Guwahati. There is also an EV charge stattion at Rupnanagr area of the city.

Chief Minister Sarma also launched the National Common Mobility Card during the program organized by the Assam State Transport Corporation.

With this, Assam has now become the third state in the country to launch this card.

Apart from ASTC, people will be able to avail metro train, railways and even shopping services in Delhi through the National Common Mobility Card. The card can be activated through the RUPAY app.
