Diptimayee’s husband, Lok Sabha MP has won Bongaigaon seat since 1983

In a significant victory for the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a key partner of BJP in Assam, debutant Diptimayee Choudhury has won the Bongaigaon assembly seat in Assam’s by-election with 74,734  votes. This is the ninth time that AGP has won the seat in a row.

Choudhury, the wife of nine-time Bongaigaon MLA and current Barpeta Lok Sabha MP, Phani Bhusan Choudhury, defeated Congress’s Brajenjit Singha by a margin of 35,164 votes.

This was 64-year old Diptimayee Choudhury’s first election. Despite being a new candidate, she successfully secured the seat, a stronghold of her family, against Congress’s Brajenjit Singha, former IGP of Assam. She also overcame some initial internal party ramblings following the announcement of her candidature.

The Bongaigaon by-poll was necessitated after Phani Bhusan Choudhury vacated the seat after his election to the Barpeta Lok Sabha seat.

In 2021, PhaniBhushan Choudhury won the seat with 82,800 votes and the vote share was 53.9%.
In 2016, Choudhury won the seat with 77,292 votes and the vote share was 56.03%.
Phani Bhushan Choudhury won the seat for the first time in 1983 as an independent candidate. He has been winning the seat since.
