BJP has retained the Behali seat as party candidate Diganta Ghatowal won the assembly seat with 50,947 votes. He defeated Congress’s Jayanta Borah by a margin of 9,051 votes.

Debutant Ghatowal managed to hold on to the seat that was won four times by party veteran Ranjit Dutta in 2001, 2006, 2016 and 2021. In 2011, Pallab Lochan Das won the seat as a Congress candidate. Das is now a BJP leader.

In 2021, Ranjit Dutta won with 53,583 votes. The vote share was 50.93%. In 2016, Dutta won with 52,152 votes and the vote share was 56.2%.

Ranjit Dutta won the Sonitpur Lok Sabha seat in the recently held Lok Sabha polls and became the MP. That is when the seat fell vacant and the bypolls were held on November 13.

Ghatowal’s victory in Behali, a seat previously held by Dutta, is seen as a boost for the BJP in Assam, solidifying the party’s position in the state.
