At a time when national capital Delhi has become the most polluted city with most poisonous air quality posing threat to people’s lives, and other parts of the country are grappling with poor air quality, Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram, has achieved an impressive milestone, topping the country’s air quality chart with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 29.
Today, the AQI stands at 32, but this number is expected to improve due to the sudden showers brought by the returning monsoon season.
The city, perched at an elevation of 1,132 meters, is known for its varied topography, which experts believe plays a significant role in maintaining the air quality. Despite noticeable vehicular movement, the large forest cover surrounding the city acts as a natural filter, compensating for the pollutants generated by traffic. Furthermore, Aizawl remains largely free from heavy industrial activity, contributing to its clean air status.
However, the city’s air quality fluctuates based on its hilly terrain, causing significant variations in different areas. These fluctuations are in contrast to the more uniform air quality seen in flat areas.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Dr. Alfred Malsawmsanga, Scientist B at the Mizoram Pollution Control Board, highlighted that air quality in Aizawl tends to deteriorate between January and May due to jhum (slash-and-burn) cultivation. While he expressed pride over Aizawl’s current AQI, he also stated, “Air quality in Mizoram has been gradually worsening over the years. We need to take proactive measures to address this issue”.
Experts have pointed out that pollutants like PM 2.5 and PM 10 increase during the dry months and are primarily caused by vehicle emissions, road dust, and construction sites. However, the arrival of the monsoon season typically improves the air quality.
Public opinion has also stressed the importance of environmental protection, with many emphasizing that small efforts and good deeds can collectively contribute to maintaining the city’s clean air.
