Their arrival is celebrated by the Monpas of West Kameng and Tawang, who regard the birds as symbols of good fortune.
The majestic black-necked cranes have begun arriving at their wintering site in the picturesque Pangchen Valley, located in Zemithang, Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. These cranes, highly revered by the local Monpa community, are seen as the embodiment of the 6th Dalai Lama and are considered auspicious. Their arrival is celebrated by the Monpas of West Kameng and Tawang, who regard the birds as symbols of good fortune.
Listed as an endangered species, the black-necked cranes are migratory birds that travel long distances to reach their wintering habitats. On Friday, a pair of these cranes landed in the valley, followed by a single crane on Sunday afternoon. By Monday this week, two more cranes had arrived, making the event a moment of great significance for the locals and authorities alike.
To ensure the safety and peaceful stay of the cranes, the Zemithang administration has issued a ban on human activities near the wintering site. Extra Assistant Commissioner Deewan Mara emphasized that quarrying and crusher units along the Nyamjang Chuu riverbanks must remain shut. A fine of Rs. 10,000 will be imposed and legal action will be taken for violations.
The administration is also coordinating with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to ensure a disturbance-free environment for the cranes. Authorities believe that their timely intervention has contributed to the successful visit of these rare birds.
