Set up at a cost of Rs 170 crore, the airport will serve several key purposes

Arunachal Pradesh today made a big leap in terms of air connectivity after Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurated the newly built infrastructure at the Tezu Airport in Lohit district today.

Set up at a cost of Rs 170 crore, the airport will serve as an important link to augment trade and commerce, agriculture, as well as serve defence purposes whenever the need arises.

Scindia terming Arunachal Pradesh as the crown of the nation said, “The entire Northeast is the top priority for PM Narendra Modi. He has already mentioned that the Northeast must be developed as the growth engine of the entire nation. This is our intent. Government of India has made an investment of Rs 170 crore for this project in Tezu, spread around an area of 40000 sq ft, it is very beautiful where culture, potention of tourism of Arunachal Pradesh has been well reflected. I firmly believe that after the landing of the ATR 72 aircraft, setting up of the Tezu airport the waves of progress and welfare will be able to reach Tezu.”

Highlighting as to how the aviation sector has flourished in the region, Scindia made a comparative analysis and said, “In 2014, there were only 945 air traffic movements in every week in the entire NE, but within 9 years the figures have increased to 1985. This means that there is an increase of more than 100 percent.”

Mentioning that, the Double Engine Government of PM Narendra Modi and Arunachal CM Pema Khandu has ushered massive transformation, the Union Civil Aviation Minister said, “It can be well acertatined from the fact that since Independence till 2014 there were only 74 airports. But within 9 years since 2014, 75 airports could be set under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra ModiWith this there are a total of 149 airports in the entire nation.”

Jyotiradity Scindia without naming any party also took a jibe at the previous governments for ignoring the sentiments of Northeast as well as Arunachal Pradesh. In this context he said, “None of the governments in the previous regimes did not set up a single airport in Arunachal Pradesh. Till 2014, no aircraft could reach Arunachal Pradesh. But within 9 years under the leadership of PM Modi, 4 airports could become a reality. These includes Hollongi Airport, Pasighat airport, Ziro airport Tezu airport. Thus it can be said that was a Zero in 65-67 years of governance and 4 in just 9 years of governance.”

“The Northeast was never given importance before. The 8 states were deprived of progress and development. Earlier, there were only 9 airports if we speak of all the 8 states, it was zero in Arunachal and Sikkim, in 65 years, but in the last 9 years the number of airports in the entire region has increased to 17, ” Scindia added.

He further hopes that due to policies taken up by the Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi the Northeast will soon become a Gateway to Southeast Asia.

The key infrastructures inaugurated today at the Tezu Airport includes-
New Terminal building of 4000 sqm, capable to serve 300 passengers during peak hours and eight lakh passengers annually
Extended Runway of 1500 mtr to cater to ATR-72 Type of aircraft, will bolster vital connectivity of Tezu with the rest of the country
Environment-friendly Terminal with modern amenities to elevate functionality, efficiency and passenger comfort.
