With India reporting 8 cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has urged the people of the state to stay vigilant, keep hands sanitized and maintain hygiene.
In a post in social media platform X, CM Khandu said, “Human metapneumovirus or HMPV is a respiratory virus that can affect individuals of all ages. While the situation requires caution, there is no need to panic. By adopting simple preventive measures, we can protect ourselves and others from transmission.”
CM Pema Khandu also appealed the public for frequent handwashing with soap and water. Avoiding face-touching, particularly the eyes, nose, and mouth. Maintaining physical distance from those exhibiting respiratory symptoms. “Stay vigilant and follow some simple precautionary steps, which can go a long way in safeguarding your health and the well-being of those around you,” wrote on X.
India has reported at least eight confirmed cases of HMPV since January 7, with infections spreading across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Maharashtra alone has confirmed three cases, including two in Nagpur and one in Mumbai.
Mizoram has set up a core committee on HMPV led by state health minister Lalrinpuii. Additionally, Rapid Response Teams have been formed at both state and district levels and Meghalaya has convened a meeting of Health Experts Committee of Meghalaya health and family welfare department on Tuesday under the chairmanship of the principal secretary, to discuss reports on HMPV flagged by various news channels and asserted that the state was ready to tackle any related situation.
HMPV, a respiratory virus that affects individuals of all age groups, poses a heightened risk to young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Public awareness and adherence to these guidelines are vital in curbing the spread of the virus.
