Arrest of Man with Russian-Made Pistol, Spark Fears of Rising Illegal Arms Trade in Tripura

The arrest has sparked concerns among Dharmanagar residents about the presence and potential spread of illegal arms in the town.
Police in North Tripura’s Dharmanagar town have apprehended a man identified as Raju Dev, who was found in possession of a factory-made, loaded pistol and ammunition. The accused, a resident of Ward No. 10 under the Dharmanagar Municipal Council, was taken into custody after a well-coordinated raid by police forces.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jeremiah Darlong, along with officers from Dharmanagar Police Station, raided Raju Dev’s residence on College Road, Gaur Gopal Sarani. During the raid, police recovered a foreign-made automatic pistol, identified as a 7.62 Russian-made weapon, along with ten live cartridges. In addition, two Android mobile phones and a vehicle were seized.
ASP Darlong disclosed that during initial questioning, the accused confessed to purchasing the firearm from Dimapur, hinting at a possible link to arms trafficking networks spanning beyond the state. Police have registered a case under the Arms Act and launched a detailed investigation to uncover any broader connections.
The arrest has sparked concerns among Dharmanagar residents about the presence and potential spread of illegal arms in the town. This incident follows a series of similar arrests earlier this year, where several arms traffickers smuggling weapons from Nagaland were apprehended in Tripura, highlighting a worrisome trend in the region.
