In one of the longest rescue operations in India, a 23-year-old hiker and mountaineer trapped in a hill cleft in Kurumbachi hills in Malambuzha in Kerala Palakkad were hauled to safety by the Indian Army today morning.
Babu, a local had tried to scale the Kurumbachi hills on February 7. During his climb, he slipped and fell into a crevice. Suffering minor injuries he holed up in the cleft for nearly two days without any food or water.
The Indian Army team after reaching the spot established contact with Babu at around 8:30 am where they came to know that Babu’s health condition was stable. They also provided food and water to the trapped climber. The rescuers told him not to shout and exhaust himself
Besides the Army teams of Bangalore and Madras Regiments, the NDRF, Coast Guard, Air Force and other agencies are also helping in the rescue operations.
Two army teams had reached on the night of February 8th with rescue operations initiated at day break. At around 10 am Babu was finally rescued from the crevice.
