The Indian Mountaineering Foundation, the apex mountaineering authority in India, has decided not to issue any permit to scale the Kangchenjunga and 23 other peaks in Sikkim that are considered sacred by the people of the State.

This decision of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation was taken at a meeting of its governing council.

The decision of the Centre to open Mount Kangchenjunga and 23 other peaks in Sikkim for expeditions, had came as a shock for the people of the State as 13 of them are considered sacred by the people of the State.

These peaks are protected as places of Buddhist worship under provisions of the Places of Worship Special Provisions Act, 1991, which cannot be climbed or scaled.

Meanwhile, the Sikkim BJP has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Home Ministry over the issue.

Speaking to Northeast Live Sikkim BJP President DB Chauhan expressed hope that the Home Ministry’s notification to open Mount Kanchenjunga and 23 other peaks for expeditions will be quashed.
