The movement against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill has gained momentum in Tripura as the Joint Action Committee of Tribal based parties and NGOs have called for an indefinite bandh from December 9.
Convener of the committee Antony Debbarma told media that cutting across party line and political differences all the indigenous organisations believe CAB would seriously affect their socio-economic interest and demographic profile of Northeast.
The organisation has demanded Tripura’s complete exemption from the ambit of this legislation.
Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura, National Conference of Tripura and Tipraland State Party have come together to form this new platform. It is chaired by former state Congress president and royal scion Pradyot Manikya Debbarma. NGOs and civil society groups like Borok Peoples Human Rights Organization have also joined them.
This committee is a revision of Movement against CAB, which spearheaded anti-CAB protests in the state in January this year.
The bandh call comes on the heels of a 12-hour TTAADC strike announced by BJP’s ally IPFT on December 9. There have been four other agitations against the CAB in the past two months by Tripura’s tribal parties, including a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
The North East Students Organization has also called for a 11-hour region shutdown on December 10 against the Bill.
