The Angami Naga tribe is one of the indigenous Naga tribes primarily found in the central and southern parts of Nagaland.
The Angami Naga tribe is set to celebrate its premier festival, Sekrenyi cum Mini Hornbill Festival, on 25 and 26 February at the Amphitheatre, Naga Heritage Village, Kisama.
Announcing this at a press briefing, the festival’s organising committee confirmed that Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will be the chief host, while Advisor for Prisons, Printing and Stationery, Kropol Vitsu, will serve as the host of the two-day festival.
The festival will showcase the vibrant culture and traditions of the Angami tribe. On the first day, hosted by Kropol Vitsu, traditional Indigenous games such as war cry, tati pfe, folk song, phrida, traditional fire-making, tholi, and wooden stop pin competitions will take place following the formal session.
On the second day, hosted by Chief Minister Rio, the festivities will feature Naga wrestling for under-12 and under-15 participants, followed by a tug-of-war competition and the grand festival feast. A musical fiesta will begin after 4:00 PM.
Adding to the cultural experience, stalls from the four Angami ranges will display antique tribal attires available for purchase. Visitors can also indulge in authentic Angami cuisine and locally harvested coffee from Angami villages.
The organising committee has extended an open invitation to all Tribal Hohos of Kohima, including Manipuri Nagas and tourists, to witness this grand cultural celebration.
Sekrenyi Festival of the Angami Naga Tribe
The Angami Naga tribe is one of the indigenous Naga tribes primarily found in the central and southern parts of Nagaland. They mainly reside in the districts of Kohima and parts of Dimapur.
Sekrenyi is celebrated in February and marks the beginning of the new agricultural season for the Angami people. It is one of the most significant festivals for the tribe.
The festival is centred around the concept of purification, renewal, and fertility. It is a time to honour ancestral spirits and seek blessings for good health, prosperity, and a bountiful harvest.
