Officials said that the militants have sneaked in from their bases in Myanmar to carry out extortion from tea gardens and coal business operators.
Just a week before Independence Day, security forces have dismantled a temporary transit camp inside the Tinkopani Reserve Forest along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.
According to sources, based on intelligence regarding the presence of a heavily armed 7-member group of United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) cadres, the Assam Police and Assam Rifles jointly launched an operation in the area under the Jagun police outpost.
During the operation, the joint team recovered several empty packets with Myanmarese tags from the busted transit camp.
Officials said that the militants have sneaked in from their bases in Myanmar with a dual objective – to carry out extortion from tea gardens and coal business operators and to carry out subversive activities ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.
The operation is still on to track down the militant group and security forces are also using air surveillance to track down the militants.
