After McDonald’s, Subway India outlets drop tomatoes from menu citing poor quality

The fast-food chain removed tomatoes from its burgers, wraps, and salads in some of its outlets in several parts of India.

Amid soaring prices of tomatoes across the country, Subway India outlets have stopped serving tomatoes in their salads and sandwiches citing quality issues.

According to reports, a Subway outlet at the Delhi airport put up a sign that read, “Temporary Unavailability of Tomatoes” saying the restaurant could not get enough supply that passed its quality checks.

Despite government’s intervention, the price of the kitchen staple has climbed a staggering 400 per cent, leading to record highs in some of the country’s markets. They are actively working to restore tomato supplies as soon as possible, outlet assured.

Everstone Group’s Culinary Brands, the franchisee for around 200 of India’s 800 Subway locations, has not made any additional statements regarding the situation. However, the exact number of outlets impacted by this decision remains unclear.

About two weeks back, McDonald’s also dropped tomatoes from its menu items in many parts of India, hit by supply shortages and quality concerns after prices of the vegetable soared to records.

While other Subway outlets across India still serve tomatoes, at least two locations, one each in New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Chennai have already stopped offering the vegetable due to its expensive price.

The move comes as consumers tighten their spending due to high inflation rates.

Targeting the budget-conscious Indian market, Domino’s recently launched a seven-inch pizza for Rs 49, the brand’s cheapest option available worldwide.

On Friday, the government said that retail prices of tomatoes are expected to fall with a higher supply of new crops from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
