As the center’s decision to extend AFSPA in Nagaland draws sharp reactions in the state Assam Chief Minister and NEDA convener Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma hoped for a positive outcome once the panel constituted to look into the repeal of AFSPA submits its reports.
Interacting with editors of leading media houses and senior journalists from Assam on the first day of the year in Guwahati CM Sarma said that the Centre has constituted a committee to examine the demand for removal of the act and he hoped that something positive will come out when the committee submits its report in 45 days.
It is to be mentioned that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio met Home Minister Amit Shah on December 23rd in New Delhi. It was decided in the meeting that the committee under the chairmanship of ministry of home affairs’ additional secretary for the Northeast will look into the repeal of AFSPA in Nagaland.
The meeting was convened to discuss conditions in Nagaland in the aftermath of the killing of 14 civilians in Mon Nagaland on December 4th.
