Devajit Saikia Resigns from Gauhati HC Bar Association: The Bar Association is opposing the proposal of Saikia.
Assam’s Advocate General, Devajit Saikia, has resigned from the Bar Association, citing a conflict of interest stemming from the state government’s proposal to relocate the Gauhati High Court from Latasil area of Guwahati to North Guwahati.
In his resignation letter submitted to Kamal Nayan Choudhury, President of the High Court Bar Association, Saikia emphasised that as Advocate General it is constitutionally and officially binding on him to support the state government’s proposal to shift the Gauhati High Court from its current location in central Guwahati to a proposed site in Rangmahal, North Guwahati.
However, the Bar Association is opposing the proposal.

The government, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has advocated for this move since 2023, asserting that it would ease traffic congestion, modernise infrastructure, and boost judicial efficiency.
“In my capacity as Advocate General, I am bound to uphold the government’s policy on relocating the High Court. Under such circumstances, it would be difficult for me to remain a member of the Bar Association while the association holds a contrary position,” Saikia remarked.
However, the proposal has encountered strong opposition from the legal community, including the Gauhati High Court Bar Association. Opponents argue that relocating the court would hinder access to justice, inconvenience lawyers and litigants, and sever the court’s historic connection with the city.
Saikia stated that his duty to uphold government policy made it untenable for him to continue as a Bar Association member while the association maintains a conflicting stance. A senior advocate with over 30 years of legal experience, Saikia was appointed Advocate General of Assam in 2021.
