Abject poverty: Assam couple sells new born son for Rs 40K, 1-year-old son for Rs 60K

First Published: 11th September, 2023 15:16 IST

Last year they sold their one-and-a-half-year-old child for Rs 40,000. This year they sold their newborn

In a deeply distressing incident, a young couple, Hugam Narzary, 25, and Bijulika Narzary, 21, residents of Gaujaunpuri 1, Selekhaguri village under Runikhata police station of Chirang district of Assam, have sold their two sons including their new born child, for a total of Rs one lakh because of abject poverty.

First they sold their one-and-a-half-year-old child for Rs 40,000 to Abinash Bargayary, a resident of the nearby Khungring village. This happened last year.

This year in July, Bijulika gave birth to another son and soon after, sold the new born for Rs 60,000 to Niran Swargiary, a resident of Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district.

The couple expressed their desperation, citing their inability to provide medical treatment for their ailing child as one of the primary reasons. They sold both the children with mutual consent, the couple said.
Bijulika Narzary, the mother, stated “We sold our child because of poverty and also because the child is ill. We don’t have money for the treatment of the child. I don’t feel bad selling my child, and I don’t want back my child. I don’t know where my children are right now.”

Police arrested both Hugam Narzary and Bijulika Narzary.
