The kidnapper identified as Amit Chandra Das, also from Tripura, has been booked for abduction and forcing the child for marriage

Tripura Police achieved a significant breakthrough on Monday as they successfully rescued a minor girl who was allegedly abducted from the state’s Unakoti district in December last year by one Amit Chandra Das of Kanchanpur in North Tripura district.

The rescue operation, was led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Kailashahar sub-division Jayanta Karmakar.

According to Karmakar, the case was registered based on a complaint filed by the girl’s father, accusing Das of kidnapping his daughter.

The police tracked down both the accused and the minor to Gujarat using cyber technology and the Local Based Service (LBS) system.

A specialized team from Tripura Police, headed by woman sub-inspector Pampi Nath, collaborated with Gujarat police to execute the rescue mission from Ahmadabad.

The minor girl received medical attention at a local health center in Dhalai district before being reunited with her family.

The accused youth was produced before a local court. He is facing charges of kidnapping and forcing a girl child into marriage.

This incident sheds light on the prevalent issue of high rate of child marriages in Tripura, as highlighted by an international study in 2019.

The report revealed Tripura’s alarming situation as the state ranks as the second-highest state in India for child marriages among girls aged 15-19 years, with over 80 percent occurring in rural areas across three districts.

Citing National Family Health Survey (NFHS) data, the study emphasized Tripura’s child marriage prevalence of 21.6%, significantly surpassing the national average of 11.9%.

As authorities continue to combat this social menace, the successful rescue operation underscores the imperative of concerted efforts to safeguard vulnerable minors from such perils.
