Nepal wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh has won hearts on social media after his ‘Spirit of Cricket’ gesture against Ireland in the ongoing Oman Quadrangular T20 Series clash at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground, Oman on Monday.
The incident took place during the 19th over of the warm-up match between Ireland and Nepal for the T20 World Cup qualifiers. Mark Adair, the Irish tailender attempted a big shot on the on-side but hardly linked with the ball, and sent it to the leg side of the pitch. He took a swift single run, but the bowler Kamal Singh Airee collected the ball with a quicker sprint, only to bump into Andy McBrine. McBrine stumbled and fell down on his face and was too far to reach the strikers end; when Kamal Singh threw the ball to wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh succesfully.
The wicketkeeper of the Nepal national cricket team, also known The Rhinos and Gorkhalis, refused to run out Andy McBrine. With his moving act of sportsmanship in an international cricket match, Sheikh melted the hearts of cricket fans all over the world.

The commentators were in all applause for Sheikh after seeing the incident and praised his cricketing compass.
“I’ve got goosebumps here in the commentary box because that’s a touching moment. It was accidental, and he could have run him out here, and Aasif Sheikh has said, ‘No, he’s not going to do it because of the spirit of the game’. That’s your nominee for the Spirit of Cricket Award for 2022 for the ICC,” one of the commentator said on-air.
After being put into bat, Ireland went on to post a total of 127 in 20 overs. For Nepal, Dipendra Singh Airee took 4/21. But in reply, Nepal could only manage 9/111. For Ireland McBrine, Simi Singh, Mark Adair and Barry McCarthy took two wickets each, and eventually won the game by 16 runs.
