949 people in 29 villages of Meghalaya affected by rains and storms: MDMA

Eastern West Khasi Hills has been the worst hit with 413 people in 14 villages being affected, 69 houses and 2 schools damaged and 50 hectares of crop destroyed.

A total of 949 people in 29 villages of 7 districts of Meghalaya were affected by the heavy rains and storm that lashed these districts in the last 48 hours.

According to statistics shared by the Meghalaya Disaster Management Authority today, the seven districts hit by the rain are East and West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, East and West Jaintia Hills, South Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills with Eastern West Khasi Hills being the worst hit.

As many as 413 people in 14 villages were affected, 69 houses and 2 schools were damaged and 50 hectares of crop destroyed in Eastern West Khasi Hills since rains and storm hit the district on May 4 and 5.

In West Khasi Hills district, 307 people have been affected with more than 60 houses being damaged.

In South West Khasi Hills, 159 people in 6 villages have been affected, and 26 houses damaged.

In South Garo Hills as many as 42 people have been affected and 292 houses damaged in the hailstorms and rains that hit the district.

In East Jaintia Hills, 25 people in 2 villages were affected and only 3 houses were damaged.

In East Khasi Hills district around 25 houses in 3 villages have been hit. Only 3 people have been affected, the MDMA report shared today said.

The West Jiantia Hills district has been least affected with only 5 houses being damaged in 3 villages.

Acting promptly on the situation, the authorities have taken up necessary action for the affected people. The affected population have been relocated with their relatives and also dry ration have been distributed to the affected families.
