Yaoshang is celebrated alongside Holi in Manipur, and various ceremonies have blended in
The 5-day Yaosang festival began in Manipur today. People were seen soaking in celebrations, with various events such as ‘Yaoshang Mei Thaba’, ‘Thabal Chongba,” and ‘Yaoshang Sports’ being lined up as part of the festivities.
Originally, the Yaoshang festival was celebrated to mark the birth of the Meitei deity ‘Pakhangba’. It is believed that Yaoshang Thabal Chongba, the traditional form of dance performed by men and women especially in the evening, is a depiction of the dance performed by the gods for days to celebrate the birth of ‘Pakhangba’.
Yaoshang is celebrated alongside Holi in Manipur, and various ceremonies have blended in.
Notably, games and sports have also become integral parts of the Yaoshang festival over the decades. Various local clubs are organising Yaoshang sports to encourage healthy celebrations of Yaoshang and Holi and to prevent youths from engaging in unwanted activities.
Since morning, thousands of people from different corners of the Imphal valley have been seen obtaining the sacred flame from Kangla to inaugurate Yaoshang sports.
People were also seen thronging the Ima Keithel for last-minute shopping for the Yaoshang festival.
