Gorukhuti Violence: People seek punishment for culprits behind incident

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma yesterday made a startling revelation regarding the violence that occurred during the eviction drive at Gorukhuti on Thursday. Chief Minister Sarma said that the government has recieved intelligence report suggesting that few people had collected money upto Rs 28 lakhs from the illegal settlers at Gorukhuti 3 months ago. The individuals had promised the illegal settlers that they will convince the government and there will be no eviction. The Chief Minister added that after failing to resist the eviction, those individuals had instigated the illegal settlers and created the havoc. Chief Minister Sarma said that the government clearly has the names of 6 persons involved in raising the money.
Chief Minister Sarma also informed that a team of PFI activists had visited the site a day before the incident on the pretext of supplying food items to the evicted families. Sarma added that various evidences are now emerging which has implicated certain people including a lecturer of a college. Chief Minister Sarma maintained that lot of explosive aspects will emerge as judicial probe into the matter progresses further.
This revelation by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sent shockwaves across the state. People are now demanding that the conspirators behind the violence must be apprehended and handed out the strictest of punishment.
The state’s indigenous Muslim community of Goria-Moria have also demanded that the perpetrators must be caught and punished. Community leader Shahir Bhuyan has said that the government must set an example in this case and punish the culprits.
Meanwhile, the All Assam Students Union has also demanded that the culprits be brought to book. AASU leader Khanindra Rajbongshi has demanded that the government must go to the heart of the matter and apprehend the culprits.
The Assam Jatiyatabadi Juba Chhatra Parishad has also called for the apprehending of the culprits and giving them out strict punishment for the violence at Gorukhuti.
