A total of 12 Rohingyas from Bangladesh were arrested in Mizoram for entering the state without valid travel documents.

The eight women and four boys were arrested from a house and taken to the Bawngkawn police station on Sunday.

It is suspected that the Rohingyas are victims of human trafficking. The arrested people had some mobile phones without sim cards in their possession.

As per reports, the 12 people were found in the residence of a woman who claimed that her cousin who lives at Tahan in Myanmar had asked her favour to keep the immigrants before being taken to te neighboring country.

This is not the first instance of Rohingya detention in Mizoram in recent times. Only last month eight Rohingya women were detained at India-Myanmar border in Vairengte town for trying to illegally enter the state.

It may be mentioned that more than 700 thousand Rohingya Muslims fled Myanmar’s Rakhine state to neighbouring Bangladesh since August 2017 after a military crackdown, triggering a massive refugee crisis.
