First Published: 16th December, 2022 10:48 IST

While, both the sides are power packed, Messi and Mbappe are jointly tied with 5-goals as the highest goal-scorer in the tournament thus far.

Are You Ready for the Battle of the GOAT and the Turtle? However, do not mistake it to be a battle in the wildlife. The GOAT and The Turtle will battle it out at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, which is only 15-km north of the city centre of Doha. This Sunday, the Globe will witness one of the most Epic Clashes in the Football history as Argentina will take on defending Champions France in the FIFA World Cup final.

Nicknamed as GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) Lionel Messi will look to power Argentina to a convincing victory, while “The Turtle” or “Donatello” as he is fondly called, Kylian Mbappe and France will play for retaining the Title. It will indeed be a Rivalry of Sorts for both the football stars on December 18.

While, both the sides are power packed, Messi and Mbappe are jointly tied with 5-goals as the highest goal-scorer in the tournament thus far. As far as statistics show, The GOAT (Messi) has made- 3 assists and played 570 minutes so far and scored 5 goals. In comparison to this, The Turtle (Mbappe) has made 2 assists and played for 477 minutes while scoring 5 goals.

In terms of Messi, the numbers only speak about brilliance of the Argentine forward who has shattered a number of records in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022.

Messi is now the top-scorer for Argentina in World Cups. He moved past Gabriel Batistuta’s record of 10 goals, after scoring his 11th career World Cup goal against Croatia. Messi now jointly shares the 6th spot in the all time scoring charts in World Cup History. Miroslav Klose tops the list with (16), Ronaldo Nazario (15), Gerd Müller (14), Just Fontaine (13), Pelé (12), while Messi ties Jürgen Klinsmann and Sandor Kocsis (11).

Not only this, 35-year-old Lionel Messi is the oldest man to score five goals in a single FIFA World Cup campaign. Meanwhile, with his 25th World Cup appearance, Messi has equalled the most number of 25 World Cup appearences by Germany’s Lothar Matthaus while playing against Croatia. Messi will surpass Lothar on Sunday, when he will make his 26th appearence in the FIFA 2022 World Cup final.

Meanwhile, the acumen of Mbappe can be well judged from the fact that he has only featured in two World Cups, but already has nine World Cup goals for France.

He scored four, including one in the final, as France won the trophy in 2018. He currently has five in 2022, equal to Argentina star Lionel Messi.

The final match assumes quite a lot of significance as Messi will look to cement his achievements in football’s history, since the Talisman has already announced his decision to retire from the international football for Argentina post Sunday’s encounter. On the other hand, it will be a great achievement for Mbappe if helps the Les Blues in winning back to back World Cup titles, as he was also a part of the 2018 World Cup Champion team.

What is more exiciting is the fact that, both Messi and Mbappe play for the French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). While Mbappe is known for his speed and swiftness, no one is even near Messi when it comes to dribbling and going past defenders.

But who will win the Race for the Golden Boot? Will it be The GOAT or The Turtle? Let’s Wait and Watch.
