Russia’s Ukraine invasion is having causing problems for the aggressor beyond the battlefield as well. Russia has now been excluded from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by FIFA and UEFA.

Both of them have issued a joint statement confirming that all Russian national teams and clubs have been suspended until further notice.

In response to mounting pressure from European nations and the International Olympic Committee, FIFA and UEFA announced on Monday that Russia would not participate in the upcoming World Cup playoffs.

Meanwhile, Russia was scheduled to play Poland in a semifinal ahead of a possible final against Sweden or the Czech Republic in March.

The Russian women’s team would also be removed from the European Championships in England in July.

In a separate move, UEFA said that it was scrapping its €40 million-per-year sponsorship arrangement with Gazprom, a Russian energy business.

UEFA’s decision comes after Saint Petersburg was stripped of the rights to host the Champions League final this season, with Paris stepping in to fill the void.
