India wins Tri-Nation Football Tournament in Imphal, defeats Kyrgyz Republic 2-0

India won the Tri-Nation Friendly trophy with a 2-0 victory over the Kyrgyz Republic, thanks to goals from Sandesh Jhingan and Sunil Chhetri

Cheers and joy filled the main stadium of the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal on Tuesday as India defeated the Kyrgyz Republic, a country ranked slightly higher than India in international football rankings, in the Hero Tri-Nation Football Tournament, 2023.

India won the Tri-Nation Friendly trophy with a 2-0 victory over the Kyrgyz Republic, thanks to goals from Sandesh Jhingan and Sunil Chhetri.

The stadium, packed with over 29,000 people, erupted in joy as India clinched the trophy.

In previous matches of the tournament, India defeated Myanmar with a score of 1-0.

Prior to Tuesday’s match, the Manipur government signed a memorandum of understanding with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for setting up a football academy in the state.

A former national football player himself, Chief minister N. Biren Singh, expressed joy over India winning the trophy and lauded the efforts and initiative of AIFF to bring the tournament to the state.

Exuding full confidence that the upcoming football academy under the aegis of AIFF will help groom and hone football talents from the grassroots, he said that Manipur will be able to produce more international-level football players.

While AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey pointed out that Indian football has seen several Manipuri players over the years. He said that the tremendous and enthusiastic crowd in Manipur will definitely give Indian football a push and help it grow.

He added that AIFF will provide technical support and talent identification for the upcoming football academy.
