Pride of Northeast Dipa Karmakar scripted history yesterday by becoming the first Indian gymnast to clinch a gold medal at a global event, announcing in style her comeback from a career-threatening injury, at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin in Turkey.
Ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar, who had missed the Rio Olympics bronze medal by a whisker, scored 14.150 to secure the top position in the tournament. She also topped the qualification with a score of 13.400.
Dipa’s name has been included in the 10-member Indian gymnastics team for the Asian Games, which is slated to begin from 18 August.
Meanwhile, wishes soon started to pour in after Dipa Karmakar’s win at the the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the 24-year-old from Tripura on her great success at the World Cup.
President Ram Nath Kovind too congratulated Dipa for making the nation and the northeast proud. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb expressed happiness and congratulated the ace gymnast for making Tripura and the Nation proud.
