According to police, the accused has been arrested and the weapon used in the crime seized.

The incident took place outside Gopal Mandir on Majitha Road.

Sudhir along with some other leaders of the party were protesting outside the temple against its authorities after a few broken idols were found in the trash in the temple premises.

More than five rounds were fired at Suri by the assailant. He sustained bullet injuries. He was taken to a hospital immediately where he succumbed to his injuries, said the Amritsar police.

Reacting to the incident, BJP spokesperson Priti Gandhi tweeted, “Right under the nose of several police officers in Amritsar, Hindu activist Sudhir Suri shot dead at point blank range. He was reportedly on the hitlist of pro-Khalistani elements. Meanwhile Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann is busy with AAP’s election campaign in Gujarat. What a shame!!”

According to police, Suri had been on several gangsters’ hit list for a while and was given security by having about eight Punjab Police officers assigned to him.

Ashwani Sharma, the president of the Punjab BJP, responded to the incident by stating that the state’s law and order situation has gone for a toss.
