Zakir Hussain, SM Krishna, Sudha Murthy, Mulayam Singh, Kumar Mangalam Birla among the eminent personalities named for the highest civilian awards

Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, former external affairs minister & Karnataka CM SM Krishna, former defence minister & UP CM Mulayam Singh Yadav, Balkrishna Doshi, Srinivas Varadhan have been conferred the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award.

Social worker and writer Sudha Murthy and industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla are among the nine Padma Bhushan awardees, the nation’s third-highest civilian award.
Of the 91 Padma Shri awardees, three are from Assam — Hemoprova Chutia honoured for their contribution to the world of Art, Hem Chandra Goswami also for Art and Ramkuiwangbe Jene for Social Work.
From Manipur two eminent personalities – K Shanathoiba Sharma for Sports Thounaojam Chaoba Singh for work done in Public Affairs were conferred Padma Shri.
From Tripura – Narendra Chandra Debbarma (Posthumous) for Public Affairs and Bikram Bahadur Jamatia for Social Work have been named for the Padma Shri.
From Nagaland – Neihunuo Sorhie for Art and Moa Subong also for Art have been conferred Padma Shri.
Karma Wangchu (Posthumous) from Arunachal Pradesh have been named for Padma Shri for Social Work.
98-year-old Tula Ram Upreti from Sikkim has been named for Padma Shri for his contribution to the world of agriculture.
Risingbor Kurkalang of Meghalaya has been conferred the Padma Shri for contrition to the world of Art.

Padma Awards are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities – art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
These Awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year. For the year 2023, the President has approved the conferment of 106 Padma Awards including 3 duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one) as per the list below. The list comprises 6 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan and 91 Padma Shri Awards. 19 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 2 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 7 Posthumous awardees.
