Tension erupted at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha after a Nepali student was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday.
The deceased student has been identified as Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student at the university.
The incident has sparked protests and raised concerns among the student community.
Though the exact cause of her death has not yet been confirmed, early reports suggest that it may have been a suicide.
According to reports, Lamsal was allegedly harassed by her ex-boyfriend, a mechanical engineering student at the same university, and her troubled relationship may have led to her tragic decision.
Following the incident, Nepali students on campus staged protests, demanding transparency in the investigation. They also blocked roads and called for the arrest of Lamsal’s ex-boyfriend.
As tensions escalated, KIIT University issued a notice instructing all Nepali students to vacate the campus.
“A Nepali student studying in the third year of B-Tech committed suicide in the hostel yesterday. It is suspected that the student was in a love affair with another student studying at KIIT. It is suspected that the student may have committed suicide due to some reason. Keeping in view the situation, the Nepali students have been sent to their respective homes. The situation presently remains calm,” the KIIT said in the notice, reported Republic.
To maintain law and order on campus, authorities deployed two platoons of police personnel. The deceased’s hostel room has also been sealed.
Expressing grief on the incident Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said, “I got to know through media and social networks that a Nepalese student died and a Nepali students were forced to vacate the hostel of KIIT University in Odisha. The government it is actively engaging in diplomatic discussions regarding the matter.”
