Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that it is great personalities and valiant leaders like Lachit Barphukan, the immortal children of this land who are the inspiration for the nation and will continue to be so.

“Great personalities like Lachit Barphukan, immortal children of Bharat Maa, are our constant inspirations. Lachit Borphukan’s life inspires us to live the mantra of Nation First,” PM Modi said speaking at the grand Lachit Divas celebrations at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

“His life inspires us to rise above self and to give the highest priority to the national interest. His life teaches us that instead of nepotism and dynasty, the country should be supreme,” the PM said.

“Is the valour of Lachit Barphukan not important? Are the sacrifices of thousands of people from Assam against Mughals not important?,” PM Modi asked and said that it is a great opportunity that the 400th birth anniversary celebrations of Bir Lachit Barphukan is happening at a time when the country is celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, 75 years of Independence. “This historic occasion is a proud chapter in the history of Assam,” PM Modi said.

“India’s history is not just about colonialism, it’s a history of warriors. India’s history is about displaying valour against oppressors, about victory, sacrifice and great tradition,” the Prime Minister said recalling the heroism of the Ahom general who fought the Mughal army and stopped them from proceeding further into Assam and northeast in the 17th century.

PM Modi released a coffee table book titled, Lachit Barphukan – Assam’s Hero Who Halted the Mughals, at the event. The book is edited by veteran journalist and Editor-in-Chief Wasbir Hussain and Prof Rajib Handique, Head of Department of History, Gauhati University.
