Many countries have been at a standstill for a period because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Countries all across the world had placed themselves on lockdown for a period of time issuing measures required to contain the virus.

We all were obliged to stay indoors to protect ourselves and stop the disease from spreading.

Well, while everyone was busy making dalgona coffee following the trend on social media, reading books, doing a part-time job, working from home etc, Ashok Aliseril Thamarakshan, a resident of Kerala’s Alappuzha, built a four-seater plane in the UK to take his family on holidays.

As per reports, Ashok who is a mechanical engineer and is settled in London built the plane himself in nearly 18 months during the lockdown in the UK.

He built the “Sling TSI” aircraft model, which he named “G-Diya”, after his younger daughter Diya.

It was always a dream for Ashok to have a small plane to take his family on vacation. And now he and his family are travelling across the UK in their four-seater plane.

Thamarakshan has already taken his family on trips across Europe on his plane.

The family has visited Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic besides the UK.

They took their first flight in February this year.

Ashok Aliseril Thamaraks has began working on the project in May 2019 at his home and was completed in November 2021.

He has spent a total of Rs. 1.8 crore on the construction of the plane.

The 4-seater aircraft has a 200 kmph top speed.
20 litres of fuel are required every hour.

The plane’s construction was overseen by the UK Civil Aviation authorities.

Thamarakshan had flown multiple test flights over three months to get the British Civil Aviation Authority’s licence.

Hailing from Kerala’s Alappuzha, Ashok Aliseril Thamaraks is the son of former state legislator A V Thamarakshan.

He acquired a BTech degree at Palakkad Engineering College.

Ashok Aliseril Thamaraks moved to the UK in 2006 to complete his Master’s degree.

He is currently employed by Ford Motor Company.

As per reports, when asked why he thought of building this aircraft, Thamarakshan said that after receiving his pilot’s licence in 2018, he initially rented small two-seater aircraft for his trips.

His family, however, consists of his wife and two daughters, thus he needed a four-seater aircraft.

However, they are rare, and even if he could find one, it would be quite old.
He said that he had to undergo comprehensive research on the topic and gain more knowledge about home-built aircraft to find a proper four-seater plane.
