Tahawwur Hussain Rana is seen offering Namaz 5 times daily in his cell at the agency headquarters.

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the key figure linked to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, who was recently extradited from the United States and handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for an 18-day custodial interrogation has made 3 requests since his custody began on April 11.

Rana has asked for a copy of the Quran, pen and paper all of which have been granted by the agency, though under strict supervision to ensure he doesn’t use the pen to harm himself.

He is seen offering Namaz 5 times daily in his cell at the agency headquarters.

“He requested for a copy of Quran which we provided. He is seen offering Namaz five times in his cell. Beyond that, he has not made any other demands,” the officer noted,” said an officer, describing Rana as a “religious man”, reported Hindustan Times.

The HT report quoting officials said Tahawwur Rana is being treated “as any other arrested person with no special treatment”.

As per court orders, Rana is also allowed to meet a lawyer appointed by the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) every alternate day.

In addition, he undergoes a medical examination every 48 hours. “All standard procedures are being followed,” an official confirmed.

The NIA may collect his voice sample to corroborate call records.

Matching the voice sample with Rana’s call record can ascertain if he was talking on the phone while giving instructions regarding the November 2008 attacks that claimed 166 lives in Mumbai, reported NDTV.

To collect Tahawwur Rana’s voice sample, his consent is required. If he refuses, the NIA can approach the court to seek permission. Any refusal on Rana’s part will be officially noted in the chargesheet a move that could work against him during the trial.

Once legal permission is obtained, experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) will visit the NIA headquarters to record the sample. The procedure will take place in a controlled, noise-free environment to ensure accuracy, reported NDTV.

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, Pakistan-born Canadian national and a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks that left 166 people dead is in New Delhi after 17 years.

This marks a big diplomatic and legal breakthrough for India and a big win in the nation’s quest for justice for all those dead and the 238 injured or left crippled for life in one of the worst terror attacks on Indian soil.

Rana was brought to the NIA headquarters on April 11 after a Delhi court granted the agency 18 days of custody.

He has since faced intense questioning as investigators attempt to uncover more layers of the larger conspiracy behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
