Former US President Donald Trump is expected to surrender early next week.
Trump, the first ever former US president to face a criminal charge, was asked to surrender on Friday (today) but his lawyers said the Secret Service needed additional time as they made security preparations.
He will appear in court in New York on Tuesday afternoon, a court spokesperson has confirmed, media reports said.
“Mr. Trump is subject to the same laws as every American. He will be able to avail himself of the legal system and a jury, not politics, to determine his fate according to the facts and the law”, US Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer said.
The flamboyant former US President and real estate magnet, Donald Trump was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on Thursday for paying hush money to cover up his alleged relations with the adult star, Stormy Daniels.
The jury created history by indicting a former US president for the first time ever. Trump now faces charges on over 30 counts related to business fraud.
The indictment has definitely given a big jolt to his bid to retake the White House next year. The charges remained under seal late Thursday. The investigation centered on payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence claims of an extramarital sexual encounter.
Prosecutors said they were working to coordinate Trump’s surrender, which could happen early next week.
They did not say whether they intended to seek prison time in the event of a conviction, a development that would not prevent Trump from assuming the presidency.
The indictment, an extraordinary development after years of investigations into Trump’s business, political and personal dealings, injects a local district attorney’s office into the heart of a national presidential race and ushers in criminal proceedings in a city that the ex-president for decades called home.
