King Charles III will be officially crowned in a magnificent and deeply religious ceremony at Westminster Abbey on May 6

Millions of people in the United Kingdom are getting ready to celebrate King Charles III’s coronation- a symbolic ceremony combining a religious service and pageantry.

Charles III will be officially crowned in a magnificent and deeply religious ceremony to be held at Westminster Abbey in London on May 6.

Charles’s coronation comes 70 years after the coronation of his mother at the age of 25 in a grand ceremony on June 2, 1953.

He will be crowned along with Camilla, the Queen Consort, and will be the 40th reigning monarch crowned there since 1066.

It may be mentioned here that Charles III became king after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died last September.

He has legally proclaimed the next monarch of Britain in the days that followed, and his coronation is finally here after months of laborious planning.

Which crown will King Charles use?

St. Edward’s Crown is considered as the centerpiece because it is used at the real crowning. In 1661, after the monarchy had been restored the previous year, it was created for Charles II.
Its medieval forerunner, which was destroyed in 1649, was rumored to have been built in the eleventh century by the English king Edward the Confessor.

Although it is not an exact copy of the earlier design, it incorporates two arches, four fleurs-de-lis, and four pattée crosses. It is made of pure gold. It has an ermine ring, a purple velvet crown, and 444 priceless stones, including rubies, amethysts, and sapphires.

What will King Charles wear for the ceremony?

In the “interests of sustainability and efficiency,” the King will reuse several historical garments worn by previous monarchs at past coronations during the Saturday service.

“His Majesty will reuse vestments which featured in the Coronation Services of King George IV in 1821, King George V in 1911, King George VI in 1937, and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, including the Colobium Sindonis, the Supertunica, the Imperial Mantle, the Coronation Sword Belt and the Coronation Glove,” the palace outlined.

“Although it is customary for the Supertunica and the Imperial Mantle to be reused, His Majesty will also reuse the Colobium Sindonis, Coronation Sword Belt and Coronation Glove worn by his grandfather King George VI, in the interests of sustainability and efficiency,” the palace explained.

Will Camilla be crowned Queen?

Yes. Camilla is not having a crown built especially for her coronation, in contrast to the three previous Queen consorts, Elizabeth, wife of George VI, Mary, wife of George V, and Alexandra, who was Edward VII’s wife. She has chosen to don Queen Mary’s crown instead. Back when she paid for the silver crown in 1911, Queen Mary’s intention was for it to serve as the permanent crown of future consorts.
The palace has said Camilla’s choice was “in the interests of sustainability and efficiency” but that she was making some “minor changes and additions.” Specifically, she wants to honor her late mother-in-law by resetting the crown with some diamonds – the Cullinan III, IV, and V – from the Queen’s personal collection.

The ‘Queen of Consort’, noted Priyanka as a ‘very talented artist’ for having designed the dress. Priyanka is from Singur, which is located in the Hooghly district and is around 50 kilometers from Kolkata.

Who are the people invited to the Coronation ceremony?

More than 2,200 people will attend the service at Westminster Abbey. While the palace did not release a detailed guest list, it has confirmed that the congregation will be made up of members of the royal family as well as international representatives from 203 countries, including approximately 100 heads of state, alongside community and charity champions.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, plus a number of other royal families, including Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco.

Other celebrities who will attend the coronation of Prince Charles include Tom Cruise, Katy Perry, Winnie the Pooh, Nichole Scherzinger, Joan Collins, Tom Jones, Bear Grylls, and Oti Mabuse. They will participate in pre-recorded video segments to commemorate King Charles’ coronation.

How much will the coronation cost?

According to a Time magazine report, the Operation Golden Orb committee, which is in charge of planning the coronation ceremony, estimates that the event could cost around 100 million pounds (over Rs 1021.5 crore).

Since it is a state event, the coronation will be paid for by the British government, using taxpayers’ money.

The Coronation has also been declared a holiday, which entails additional expenses. Each UK bank holiday costs the nation almost 2.3 billion pounds, according to a recent analysis by the Centre for Economics and Business Research.

Where will you get to watch the coronation ceremony?

The ceremony will start at 11 AM (3:30 PM in India). The King’s procession is expected to arrive at the enure shortly before the ceremony. BBC One and BBC Radio will both air the ceremony. The ceremony will be broadcast on BBC Sounds and BBC iPlayer.

Additionally, a version of the show with a sign language interpreter will be broadcast on BBC Two for those who have hearing impairments, and a version of the show that is accessible for viewers who are blind or partially sighted will be made available on the Red Button.

Is there a coronation dress code?

Regular guests are going to wear “day dress” if they are ladies or a morning coat, a suit, or a military uniform if they are men. In both situations, “decorations” (presumably of the military/state variety, not tinsel) and “celebratory national dress” are also permitted.

What will be the royalty dish served on the Coronation day?

Three official recipes for King Charles III’s Coronation will be:
Ken Hom’s Coronation Roast Rack of Lamb with Asian-style Marinade, Nadiya Hussain’s Coronation Aubergine, and Adam Handling’s Strawberry and Ginger Trifle.
