Jersey No 12 holds a lot of significance and emotions for Indian cricket fans

Riyan Parag, the promising young cricketer from Assam, who is now a member of the Indian National cricket team would be wearing the iconic Jersey No. 12, a number famously worn by the legendary all rounder Yuvraj Singh. The Indian team will clash against Zimbabwe in the upcoming 5 T20 series tour of Zimbabwe from 6 July to 14 July.

Yuvraj Singh, the legendary all-rounder, had played a crucial role in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ICC World Cup victories. He is remembered for his fearless cricket and charismatic presence on the field. His legacy is something every young cricketer aspires to emulate.

Yuvraj made his ODI debut for India in 2000 and his Test debut in 2003. He quickly established himself as a powerful middle-order batsman and a handy left-arm spinner. He played a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2007, notably hitting six sixes in an over against England’s Stuart Broad. In the 2011 ODI World Cup, Yuvraj was the Player of the Tournament, scoring 362 runs and taking 15 wickets, significantly contributing to India’s triumph in lifting the World Cup trophy after 28 years.

Soon after the 2011 World Cup, Yuvraj was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer (mediastinal seminoma). He underwent treatment in the USA and made a successful return to cricket in 2012. His battle with cancer and the subsequent toll it took on his body affected his form and fitness. Despite a courageous comeback, he struggled to regain his pre-cancer performance levels. Yuvraj’s performance in domestic cricket and IPL did not consistently meet the high standards required for selection in the national team. His last international match was in June 2017. Yuvraj expressed a desire to explore other opportunities in life beyond playing cricket, including mentoring young cricketers and involving himself in charity work through the Yuvraj Singh Foundation. He left behind a significant legacy in Indian cricket, marked by his exceptional performances, inspirational personal journey, and contributions beyond the field.

Parag’s selection for the Zimbabwe tour is seen as a testament to his hard work and consistent performances. With the Zimbabwe series around the corner, all eyes will be on Parag as he steps onto the field, donning the iconic No. 12 jersey. Will he carve out his own legacy and add new chapters to the storied history of Jersey No. 12? Only time will tell.
