Mahanta revealed that an FIR has been lodged at Dispur Police Station, identifying the vehicle’s number as AS01PC7157.

Maini Mahanta, editor of Nandini, an Assamese women’s magazine, shared a harrowing experience involving an Uber driver on December 29, leading to swift intervention by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In a post on X, Mahanta recounted her ordeal, stating that she booked an Uber Premier ride in Guwahati late at night. When she requested the driver to switch on the air conditioner due to her dust allergy, he refused, arguing, “I have not booked an AC ride.” Upon her insistence, the driver rudely suggested she get down if she wanted an air-conditioned ride.

“I called my husband to enquire if Uber has any such categories, the driver stopped the car in a deserted road, hurled abuses, tried to manhandle me and forced me out of the vehicle. Fearing my life, I got down and had to call for help in the middle of a deserted road at night,” Maini Mahanta wrote on X.

She described being left traumatised and later hospitalised due to the distress. Mahanta revealed that an FIR has been lodged at Dispur Police Station, identifying the vehicle’s number as AS01PC7157. She also tagged Assam Police, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Uber India in her post, urging immediate action for the safety of women in Guwahati.

Reacting to her post, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed Assam Police DGP GP Singh to take swift action. “Please take action immediately @assampolice @gpsinghips,” the Chief Minister wrote on X.
