The demand for Roman script in Kokborok language is getting bigger. Now the women’s wing of TIPRA Motha is all set to launch a massive movement called ‘Raj Bhavan Abhiyan’ on June 24 demanding adoption of the Roman script for Kokborok language.
The tribal student and youth organizations such as TISF and TSF, the Tipra Women Federation (TWF) have been demanding Roman script for Kokborok language.
TWF would also submit a memorandum to Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya urging him to fulfil their demand for the Roman script in the Kokborok language, said TWF Secretary Sharmila Debbarma.
She said that tribal women from across the state would participate in the Raj Bhavan Abhiyan. They will gather at a place and march towards the Governor’s House to submit the memorandum.
The purpose of the protest is to highlight the longstanding demand for the Roman script for the Kokborok language, which has remained unaddressed for more than five decades, said Sharmila Debbarma.
Debbarma said that despite the majority of the indigenous community insisting for the Roman script, the demand to adopt the Roman or English script for Kokborok language has been an unresolved issue for over five decades.
She also alleged a few political parties of politicising the issue, even though it is not political in nature but essential for the existence of the indigenous people, as the absence of a script jeopardizes the language’s future.
She further said that the previous governments have failed to address this long-pending issue.
The row over Kokborok script started after a letter from the Directorate of Kokborok and other minority languages advised the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to prepare Kokborok question papers for board exams in Bengali script only.
However, Chief Minister Manik Saha has dismissed any such act.
