Tripura: Interstate drugs smuggling racket busted, 3 arrested

The Tripura Police busted an inter-state drugs smuggling racket and apprehended 3 drug peddlers in connection with the case.
Acting on specific inputs, the Tripura Police intercepted a car with Assam registration number at the border town Dharmanagar. Upon frisking the vehicle and the passengers, cops recovered a soapbox containing 12 grams of heroin.
Following this the police arrested the peddlers identified as Sahib Uddin (19), Suman Uddin (22), and Riyazul Uddin (25).
The trio hail from Barigram of Patharkandi in Assam’s Karimganj district.
A case has been filed under NDPS Act as further investigation is underway.
Worth mentioning, the prevalence of drugs in Tripura and the state being used as a corridor for transportation of narcotic has raised concern prompting the Manik Saha government to initiate timely action.
The gravity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that altogether 915 people were arrested in connection with 551 narcotic drug seizure cases registered in different police stations of Tripura in the first 10 months of 2023.
Besides, over 40,000 kg ganja, cough syrup of 2.98 lakh bottles, 3.85 lakh tablets, 18.26 kg of heroin were seized during the period, Tripura Social Welfare Minister Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy had informed the Tripura Legislative Assembly, earlier this month.
From 2013 to 2017, only 425 people were arrested in 404 NDPS cases, the minister said. During the rule of the first BJP government in the state between 2018 and 2022, 2,918 people were arrested in connection with 1,939 NDPS cases.
