Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to eradicating HIV/AIDS in the state by 2030. To expedite the mission further,CM Saha chaired a crucial review meeting of the Tripura State AIDS Control Society in Agartala, where he assessed the ongoing efforts and discussed future strategies to combat the disease.
The meeting brought together officials from the health department, the Tripura State AIDS Control Society, and other key stakeholders. Discussions focused on the progress made so far, the challenges that lie ahead, and strategies to further reduce the number of new cases. CM Saha emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach, including increased public awareness and rigorous identification of the sources of infection. He urged officials to ensure that Tripura’s rate is further reduced.
In a bid to intensify these efforts, CM Saha also launched a statewide Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign aimed at raising awareness about HIV/AIDS. He emphasized on expanding HIV screening and announced plans to establish drug rehabilitation centers in eight districts across the state.
This renewed focus comes in the wake of recent reports that shed light on the state’s HIV/AIDS situation, with around 1,500 new cases being registered annually. The state has been grappling with high-risk behaviors, including injectable drugs use, particularly among young adults like students and youths.
Last month, reports of AIDS and HIV-related deaths over the past 17 years prompted widespread concern, bringing Tripura’s battle with the epidemic into the spotlight.
The High Court of Tripura recently issued a notice to the state government, seeking a detailed report on the measures being taken to address the crisis. CM Saha’s recent actions reflect a concerted effort to respond to these concerns and to set the state on a path towards eradicating the disease by the end of the decade.
