Tripura Assembly’s Monsoon Session from tomorrow, fireworks expected

Session is expected to be stormy with the Opposition gearing up to raise issues like unemployment and the Kokborok script issue

The four-day Monsoon Session of the Tripura Assembly, set to begin tomorrow, is expected to be a stormy one with the Opposition gearing up to hit the Treasury Bench by raising issues including unemployment and the sensitive Kokborok script issue.

TIPRA Motha has indicated its intent to raise various pressing matters during the session. These include the demand for adopting the Roman script for Kakborak language, addressing the issue of unemployment, pending village committee election, concerns over retrenched 10,323 teachers, the water crisis, deteriorating quality of education, reduced budget allocation for MGNREGA, and the fund crisis in the TTAADC.

Animesh Debbarma, the Leader of the Opposition Party in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, stated that TIPRA Motha MLAs have already held discussions with other opposition parties to collectively raise these issues in the House and exert pressure on the ruling party.

Debbarma expressed dissatisfaction with the state government’s decision to form a ‘Script Selection Committee’ for the development of Kokborok language, led by former MLA Dr. Atul Debbarma and two other members.

He argued that this committee was unnecessary since the Chief Minister had previously stated that students could choose between Bengali or Roman script for Kokborok.

Debbarma also highlighted the existence of expert reports on this matter that have yet to be implemented.

Moreover, Debbarma raised concerns about the committee members’ qualifications and expertise in the subject, questioning the motives behind their selection.

He said that though the BJP claimed that huge development is taking place in the state including in the tribal areas but the ground reality is that the budget of TTAADC has been drastically reduced and due to fund crisis till today that is on the sixth day of the month the salaries of the staff of TTAADC could not be paid.

He added that the government intentionally is not releasing the funds to defame the TIPRA Motha which is in power in the TTAADC but the tribal people who have been always deprived by the state and central government know the fact.

The Opposition Leader also brought attention to the recruitment process for teachers, pointing out flaws in maintaining the reservation roster.

He cited the case of recruiting a minimal number of teachers, ignoring quotas and leading to a legal challenge in the High Court. Debbarma stated that over 5304 STGT posts remain vacant, with double the number of qualified candidates available, yet the government planned to recruit only 230 graduate teachers without adhering to the quota system.

Debbarma further criticized the delayed publication of results for government teacher qualifying tests, despite a significant number of vacancies and a high number of unemployed youth in Tripura.

The Opposition Leader alleged that the government’s intention is to prolong and defer action on these issues until the next assembly election.

He criticized the ruling BJP’s claims of a “double engine government,” asserting that the engines are nonfunctional.

Debbarma warned that these pressing matters would be raised in the upcoming assembly session, and the ruling party should be prepared to face the united opposition on the House floor.

Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy will present the budget for the current financial year on the opening day of the session but the Opposition.
