Tripura: 5 women drug smugglers arrested at Dharmanagar ISBT

First Published: 20th February, 2024 8:19 IST

According to the police, the arrested peddlers had concealed the consignment in their bodies and were planning to board a bus to Bihar.

Amid concerns over drugs smuggling which has reached an alarming level in Tripura, the police has managed to bust an interstate drugs smuggling racket. But what is shocking is the fact that involvement of women in such illicit trade has also been exposed.

Acting on specific inputs, 7 persons among which 5 are women, were arrested at the Dharmanagar Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in North Tripura , just before they could board a bus bound for Bihar.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects, hailing from Jirania in West Tripura district, traveled to Kumarghat in Unakoti district by road before proceeding to Dharmanagar ISBT via autorickshaw.

“They were intending to depart for Bihar. We apprehended five women, one man, and a three-year-old child and they shall be presented before the court today. An NDPS case has been registered against them at the police station,” said Debasish Saha, Sub Divisional Police Officer of Dharmanagar.

Saha further disclosed that the police found 17.700 kilograms of cannabis concealed on the bodies of the detainees.

Further investigation is underway to unearth the nexus behind this.
