The Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized nearly 200 packets of Yaba tablets worth Rs 50 lakh from the Mumbai-Agartala Express and arrested a suspected drug trafficker late last night.
The seizure took place when the train arrived at Jirania station in West Tripura. Acting on suspicion, RPF officials detained a man identified as Habibul Rahman, a resident of Udaipur in the Gomati district of Tripura. A search of his belongings led to the discovery of the contraband, said BK Sinha, Assistant Commandant of RPF.
According to preliminary investigations, Habibul had collected the consignment from Badarpur railway station in Assam and was transporting it to Agartala where he was supposed to hand over the consignment against some payment but was intercepted by the RPF.
Assistant Commandant Sinha stated that the recovered consignment of Yaba tablets has an estimated market value of Rs 50 lakh.
A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused.
He will be produced before the court in Agartala today, where police will seek his remand for further investigation.
Authorities suspect the consignment is part of a larger drug trafficking network operating across the northeastern region. Further investigations are underway to identify others involved in the racket
