Madrasa teacher turned Maulavi wanted for sexually harassing children arrested in Assam

An absconding Madrasa teacher wanted in Tripura under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, for allegedly sexually harassing children, was apprehended after six years on Friday by Assam state police from its jurisdiction and handed over to its Tripura counterpart on Saturday.

The arrested person identified as one Jabbar Ali, a resident of Karimganj in Assam has been arrested from Churaibari in Assam by police from the Nilambazar police station and in connection to case number 108/20017 of Belonia police station in South Tripura district of Tripura, Inspector Paritosh Das, officer in charge of Belonia Police Station said.

Das added that a specific case was filed in 2017 at the Belonia police station against Ali in under Sections 377 of the IPC and Section 6 of the POCSO Act. He will be produced in the Belonia Session Court.
Jabbar Ali had joined as a Maulavi in a mosque at Belonia in South Tripura district and started teaching Islam to children.

Soon there were complaints of sexual assault and a police case was also filed against him in 2017.

Realising that he is going to be arrested, he fled from Tripura and since then was absconding till he was arrested yesterday from Churaibari, a town in the Tripura- Assam border and today was produced in a Tripura court which had sent him to jail remand till March 30.
