Bangladesh Violence: Around 150 Students Return Home Via Tripura

Returning students are being supported with transportation, accommodation, food, and water, and this assistance will continue as more students return

The violence in Bangladesh over a job quota row has forced over 150 Indian students to return to India via Tripura’s Akhaura international check post in the past two days.

As many as 50 Indian students studying in various colleges and universities in the country entered India today via the Akhaura international check post. More students are expected to return to India via Tripura in the coming days.

Speaking to the media, Rajiv Agnihotri, the BSF DIG at Gokul Nagar sector headquarters, informed that the BSF continues to communicate with its counterparts, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

“We have been waiting at Akhaura and other check posts for the returning Indian students. We have had cordial discussions with BGB officers over the phone. They have been accommodating and continue to assist our students along with their college authorities on their way to the border checkposts,” said DIG Rajiv Agnihotri.

“According to our information, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka is also actively engaged with Indian students, providing necessary support. The central government has instructed us to assist the students, and we are committed to doing our best,” Agnihotri added.

Agnihotri emphasized that returning students are being supported with transportation, accommodation, food, and water, and this assistance will continue as more students return.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media, one of the students from Assam, who crossed into India through the ICP today, described the challenges they faced.

“The situation in Bangladesh is deteriorating, and we had no choice but to return. Our college arranged transport in the form of an ambulance, and BGB officers and soldiers supported us along the way,” the student, identified as Jahirul Islam, said.

He expressed gratitude to the Indian High Commission, BSF personnel, and all Indian officials for their unwavering support.

Jahirul further informed the media that not just Indian students but also students from Nepal and Bhutan are leaving Bangladesh through various routes and check posts.

On being asked as by when the students could be expected to return to Bangladesh to complete their studies, Jahirul said, “We have to wait until the situation there stabilizes; until then, we cannot return to our colleges and institutions.”

According to reports, the students who reached Tripura today will return to their respective states after staying overnight there under BSF supervision.
