Despite Objections Tripura Govt Signs MoU with Indian Hotels for Luxury Taj Hotel at Historic Pushpabanta Palace

Tripura Govt Signs MoU with Indian Hotels, IHCL will invest Rs 250 crore to build Taj Pushpabanta Palace, a five-star hotel.

Despite objections from tribal youth organisations, opposition parties, and BJP ally Tipra Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, the Tripura government has signed an MoU with Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), a Tata Group subsidiary, to develop a luxury hotel at the historic Pushpabanta Palace.

Under the MoU, IHCL will invest Rs 250 crore to build Taj Pushpabanta Palace, a five-star hotel with approximately 100 rooms. While most accommodations will be constructed outside the heritage structure, a few signature suites will be housed within the palace to preserve its royal charm.

The agreement was signed on Friday by Kiran Gitte, Secretary of Industries & Commerce, and Jayanta Das, Area Director & General Manager of IHCL. The signing took place at the Tripura Institution for Transformation office in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Saha, Industry Minister Santana Chakma, and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury.

Chief Minister Saha described the agreement as a significant step for Tripura’s development. He highlighted that this is the first time IHCL has partnered with a government to develop a royal heritage hotel.

“This project aligns with our vision to modernise Tripura, boost tourism, and generate employment. Around 200 direct and several indirect job opportunities will be created,” CM Saha stated.

Pushpabanta Palace, also known as Kunjaban Palace, was built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya. After Tripura’s merger with India, it served as the Governor’s residence until 2018.

Notably, the palace was originally slated to become a national-level digital cultural museum, with its foundation stone laid by President Droupadi Murmu in October 2022.

Opposition parties like the CPIM and Congress have criticised the hotel project, demanding that the palace be preserved as a historical site. Despite this, CM Saha reaffirmed that the project would enhance Tripura’s global tourism appeal while safeguarding its heritage.
