Alarming: Tripura reports over 13,000 malaria cases in a month

The number of malaria cases in Tripura is very high in the last 4 years as compared to other Northeast states

Tripura is battling one of the worst situation arising out of malaria outbreak. Since 2019, the figures indicating the total number of cases has touched a record high as per data released by the National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control.

Data shows that as of July 2023, a total of 13035 malaria cases have been detected in the state so far, out of a total of 5, 73, 901 blood smears examined (BSE)s. 1 life has been lost till date. Tripura in 2023 has reported the highest number of malaria cases as compared to the rest of the Northeast states, followed by Mizoram.

If we look at the figures, Tripura reported 12, 771 cases out of 11, 81, 946 BSE in 2022. 3 malaria deaths were reported that year.

Prior to that in 2021, 10,136 malaria cases were detected in the state, out of 9,27, 088 blood smears examined. The death toll that year was 4.

In 2020, the number of malaria cases in the state stood at 3395 with 2 deaths.

In 2019, there were 12, 437 malaria cases in the state and 1 death.

The situation is also quite alarming in the Teliamura subdivision in Khowai district, as fresh cases have been reported from the far flung areas. Sudden rise in malaria cases has been noticed in the Reang dominated Tirthamani, Kakrachar, Hajrapara villages.

Patients of all ages, from children to the elderly have fallen prey to the disease and are availing treatment at the Teliamura subdivision hospital.

Some of the patients admitted in the hospital expressed that along with treatment they are also getting free medicines from the hospital. Hospitalised patients also informed that many more fever patients are still suffering in their homes as due to poverty they are unable to afford the transportation and treatment.

Earlier, these areas witnessed a widespread malaria outbreak in 2015-16.

The resurgence of malaria in Teliamura subdivision is a cause for concern. If the current outbreak is not contained promptly, it could potentially lead to a more severe malaria epidemic in the future.

Data shows that the highest number of malaria cases have been detected in Tripura followed by Mizoram since 2019.
